Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.

What We Believe
45+ is not the end, but the beginning of the best years of your life both personally and professionally.
Your life and work experiences are the most valuable assets you have to offer.
You are not behind the times or incapable of learning new skills; you are just overwhelmed by the ever-increasing speed of technology and how it is adapted to our modern workplace and lives.
The greatest challenge is improving yourself by investing in yourself.
With the right support and community, you can do anything!
My story started about 12 years ago when I was in my late 40’s working for a company and realized that I was behind the times and that I needed to change. Once I changed, I knew I could help the company change.
The company I worked for was utilizing the same old sales techniques and relied on print catalogs and brochures, coffee mugs, hats and pens, etc. to get business. No CRM or sales territory planning whatsoever. We went to the same trade shows, advertised in the same trade magazines, and thought websites, social media (Facebook & LinkedIn) were a fad because we KNEW that in the end, people buy from people. Boy, were we wrong!
When I started in business in the late 80’s, I was one of the crazy ones. I was a misfit and a rebel. I saw things differently. But then something happened. I became one of the mainstream and eventually conformed.
In fact, I eventually became part of the problem. I perpetuated what wasn’t working. I shared the same view as the company on what previously worked in sales and marketing and was just relying on my same old bag of tricks. I even had the same suit and shoes from the late 80’s and early 90’s. You know the ones, tassel shoes, wide ties and cuffed, pleated pants that were too long. That was the style, and we all wore the same uniform.
So, what happened? I got old and complacent. It was harder to learn and keep up with all the new technology and buzz words so I gave up. I kept relying on the same old stuff I knew for years. I discredited all the new technology and techniques as a fad or said, “the old ways are better” and a host of other excuses. I dug in and refused to change.
Along with that, my performance and that of the company was not very good. We kept trying the same things and now we were getting different results – none! Sales were bad and we kept attracting the same people who were just like us. Insert definition of insanity here – right?!
So, what was the shift, what changed? After a long weekend of looking in the mirror and doing a gut check, I realized what I had become. Or rather, what I failed to become. The next week and after several discussions with the owner, we decided to clean house, erase the board and start from scratch. I must give a lot of credit to the business owner who got out of his comfort zone and trusted me to make the change happen. Then I had to make it happen! GULP!
What did I do? I opened my mind up to learning new things and getting my skills up to date (Upskilling or re-skilling). I looked at what successful people and companies were doing, both in and outside of my industry.
I learned new software skills. I embraced social media. I opened my mind to new ideas and ways of thinking and new ways of understanding what the customer wants and needs. I looked for new ways of making it easy for the customer to do business with us. I learned how to leverage technology to allow a small company to play with the big boys in the industry. I learned how to level the playing field to give the company and myself more opportunities to engage the customer. I realized that people make it happen – people who share your passion and vision. I realized the world is a noisy place and we needed to rise above the cacophony to get the attention of our market. I bought some new clothes! I got a modern haircut (still holding on to the hope that the mullet will return – just kidding!). I could go on and on and on….
My old circle was negative. They were low energy. They had no initiative. They didn’t take the business serious anymore. They were angry and didn’t know why. They spread their discontent to other employees and even to customers.
Then, something strange happened. Some of my business colleagues that I had known for years seemed distant, seemed disconnected to me. I started feeling like the rebel, the outsider as I began seeing things differently. Then I realized that I had changed. I had grown. My circle of people were now strangers and an impediment to my progress. At that point, when I changed, my outlook changed, and my business associates and friends changed.
My new circle is positive and encouraging. They are high energy. They are happy and love to have fun. They look for new ways to do business and serve the customer. Building a business and growing it is fun again. My new circle wants to do business with people and companies that share our values - positive, growth and having fun in the process!
The company I mentioned previously also changed. We gladly invested in and adopted new technology. We engaged our customer base with confidence. We simplified our product line and became the go-to company in our industry because of our focus and technology. We radically changed our sales process to engage the customer and solve their problems. We were having fun. We were selling again. We were very profitable. Sound good?
